Spotlight on SUNY Libraries: Creating a K-12 Fiction Cataloging Scheme That Works Online

*A Zoom link will be sent after you register.*

Join Sue Slivan, Jennifer Parker, and Lisa Czirr from SUNY Cortland for the next Spotlight on SUNY Libraries.  The Spotlight series showcases the great work happening in SUNY libraries and fosters a network of collaboration among SUNY librarians and library staff.

Description:

The Teaching Materials Center in Memorial Library contains curricular collections for education students to use in their K-12 coursework and placements. Since these items may include a varied assortment of formats and levels (e.g. picture books, realia, puppets) they can be challenging to effectively catalog. Librarians and staff in all departments at SUNY Cortland have long wanted a different cataloging schema for the fiction titles in their Teaching Materials Collection. This presentation will discuss how they devised a new schema and implemented it, using Excel spreadsheets as the driver. Challenges and successes will be discussed. Ultimately, the disruption during the implementation was minimal, and the update has improved usability for instruction, staff and patrons.

About the presenters:

Sue Slivan is the Technical Services Librarian at SUNY Cortland. She was hired in January 2023 and is responsible for purchasing and cataloging all materials for Memorial Library, in addition to managing the technical services staff.

Jennifer Parker is the Discovery Services Librarian at SUNY Cortland and was the interim Technical Services Librarian during 2022.  She manages the library systems and is responsible for project management, including major cataloging projects.

Lisa Czirr is the Teaching Materials Center Librarian at SUNY Cortland and is the instructional librarian and liaison to the Education and Literacy programs who are the primary users of the Teaching Materials Collection.

Spotlight on SUNY Libraries is designed to be an informal conversation about specific topics related to SUNY libraries.  After a presentation from our SUNY colleagues, there will be time to ask questions, chat, and discuss.  The session will be recorded for those who cannot attend, and associated documents and resources will be shared out.
