Library Week Panel Presentation -- The Student Workforce: Effective Approaches to Student Worker Programs in SUNY Libraries Online
Join Sarah O'Shea (SUNY Oswego), Mechele Romanchock (Alfred University), and Christi Sommerfeldt (SUNY Potsdam) for an engaging panel discussion on best practices for hiring, training, and mentoring student workers in SUNY libraries. Panelists will share insights on recruitment strategies, onboarding, supervision, and advocating for student employment. The audience will learn how to create a meaningful work experience that supports both students' professional growth and library services.
About the presenters:
Sarah O’Shea has been a librarian for over 24 years, both in public and academic libraries. She is currently the Access Services Librarian at SUNY Oswego’s Penfield Library and oversees the library’s student assistant program.
Mechele Romanchock is the Director of Libraries at Alfred University and the New York State College of Ceramics, prior to that she was the Public Services Librarian. She has supervised and mentored student employees in SUNY Libraries for the past 12 years including positions at Alfred State College and Jamestown Community College.
Christi Sommerfeldt serves as the Access Services Librarian at SUNY Potsdam’s College Libraries and assists with supervising Crumb Library student employees. With a background in school, public, and academic libraries, she has been in her current position since November 2022.
